- Respondus Lockdown Browser does not work on Chromebooks
- Most Respondus problems are due to one of the following:
- Firewall conflicts > turn off the firewall
- Anti-Virus software conflicts > turn off the anti-virus program
- Loss of internet connectivity > send teacher a message and try to reconnect and resume exam
- Other potential issues
- Give the browser a few seconds to fully load the exam before clicking 'Take the Quiz'. Clicking too soon has been reported as a potential cause of issues
- Browse to the quiz from the Assignments page, or the Modules page. Sometimes following links in notifications or in the 'To do' section of your Dashboard will fail to send all of the necessary parameters to the Canvas server.

Respondus LockDown Browser: Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within the LMS. When students use LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading. Contact the Office. - Blank screen during exam
A blank screen indicates that the browser has lost connectivity with your institution's server, and the webpage cannot load into the browser.
In most cases, you should be able to leave your exam, shut down LockDown Browser, and restore your internet connection. We recommend restarting your computer and moving as close to the router as possible.

- LockDown Browser appears as malware or a virus
This is a potential problem when installing Respondus Lockdown Browser.
Security software or an 'anti-malware' program with very high settings might falsely detect LockDown Browsers as malware such as a virus, Trojan or parasite. The security program would block the download or corrupt the LockDown Browser installer.

- Error Message:'Update server is not supplying information, or the connection to update server is blocked.'
When the warning appears, 'Update server is not supplying information, or the connection to update server is blocked. Please try again later' this typically indicates that security settings or another application is blocking access to the Respondus servers that LockDown Browser uses at startup

- You must close SSInvitationAgent in a Mac
The 'SSInvitationAgent' is actually a component of other applications such as Apple Messages that also offers a screen sharing option, which is separate from the Mac->System Preferences->Sharing indicated in a warning when starting LockDown Browser 2.0 for Mac.

If your webcam is not detected at some point during the pre-exam webcam check, and you see the below message, it is likely caused by 3rd party anti-virus software that is installed on your computer. It's also possible that you aren't seeing the below message, but rather are experience a freeze/hang on one of the steps. This, too, may be caused by anti-virus software.

If you see an image of camera with an arrow through it during your pre-exam webcam check, it is because of a privacy setting that is enabled in your camera's software utility.

The above error indicates that the exam's LockDown Browser settings could not be detected. For Canvas users, this may be due to you not letting each page fully load before clicking on the 'Take Quiz' button.

In Peter Hessler’s article, “How China Controlled the Coronavirus” in The New Yorker, Hessler addresses the main role the Chinese government played in the successful lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Hessler emphasizes the societal duty that every individual in China understood. They saw the COVID-19 virus threat as a communal threat that was extremely serious to all aspects of life. The Chinese government took the dangers of the virus so seriously to the point of having a year-old baby that tested positive being held in medical observation for more than a month. However, Hessler quickly amends such dramatic examples as distracting from the immensely useful techniques of the Chinese approach to end lockdown and return to normal life. The article raises a vital bioethical question regarding paternalism by the government and societal duty in the United States. The American government must institute a paternalistic mindset regarding lockdown procedures, while also preserving state officials’ autonomy and having a utilitarian societal approach.
A key difference Hessler indicates between China and The United States is the education and the effort of their peoples. In China, society respects science highly and are grown up in an uber-competitive educational system. Even though it may be criticized, such qualities, with government structure, were essential to fight the pandemic successfully. On the other hand, the Americans’ response to the pandemic has been significantly more passive. To alter this passive emotional response, the American government should take a paternalistic approach. In fact, under Dworkin’s theory of justified paternalism, paternalism is warranted to preserve a wider range of freedom for the individual in question (in this case the individuals). By the American government establishing certain lockdown procedures, such as mandating mask-wearing, we are attempting to preserve not only a wider range of freedom post-coronavirus yet preserving this freedom at a quicker rate. Furthermore, state government officials may also have a say in “intensifying” such requirements depending on the threat the virus holds on the state itself. Thus, having an effective combination of state official autonomy and national government paternalism.
Lockdown Browser Install
In such a scenario of paternalism, societal duty must be touched upon. Realistically, it would be super difficult in America for state populations to rely on both state and national government for rules (China strictness seems impossible due to violation of human rights). However, by changes in societal thought incorporating the bioethical practice of utilitarianism, it may be possible. Our people must see that morally right actions during the pandemic, such as following guidelines and going above and beyond to keep our country safe, will benefit every American in the long-run. Also, in such political unrest, establishing trust in our government with their paternalistic view on regulations would be tremendously beneficial to the overall good of society.
